AnonymousGuestIs the hand meant to move one hand’s breadth from the body or from the surface of the clothing? Or, put another way: Does it matter if my moving hand brushes my clothing if I am wearing bulky clothes?
Thanks, Evan

AnonymousGuestEvan, my guess would be that the distance is from the body, not clothes. Personally, I don’t like to wear anything either too baggy or restricting when I practice. But it should be fine as long as the clothing in the way is not too distracting.

PaulCavelMemberHi Evan,
Your hand should definitely not touch your body at any time as it breaks the flow and etheric field around your body. About a closed fist distance from your body is what is initially recommended. When your sensitivity grows then your can go more or less.

AnonymousGuestThanks Richard, so it doesn’t matter if my hand touches my clothing? It feels like it does.

AnonymousGuestHi all,
As you move your hand along the pathways of the movements of Dragon and Tiger, at all times you want all parts of your moving hand (palm, fingertips, etc) to be at least one hand width away from the skin of your body.
When we say hand width we mean the distance from the outside (little finger) edge of your hand across your palm to your thumb. For my hand that distance is almost 4 inches (10 centimeters). For someone with smaller hands it might be 2 and a half to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters).
Your clothes would have to be really bulky to be out that far away from your body, but I guess that’s possible in some body positions. But for the most part I wouldn’t think that you’d be touching your clothes. So it sounds like you’re moving your hands too close to your body if you’re consistently touching your clothes.
That distance is the minimum you should maintain, even with your fingertips. As you become more sensitive you’ll choose the distance away from your body where you feel the chi “best”. Different people define this “best” differently. I sometimes say the distance where you feel the most chi sensations. But that distance should never less than the one hand’s width from the body.
Bruce has explained that within that hand’s width space there are complex interactions going on between the physical body energy and the etheric (or chi) body energy. If you move your hand through that space too close to the physical body, then you interfere with those interactions.
Hope this helps clarify.

Can you please describe these interaction or point me to a place where I can learn about what is going on here?

AnonymousGuestHI Eric,
I’ve never asked Bruce details about this. In general, he encourages us to not ask intellectual questions, but to instead explore what we feel on our own regarding a question, come up with an what we think is the answer, and then ask him if we’re on the right track. Your question hasn’t been a particular interest of mine to explore, so I’ve never asked him. If you’re really interested, then hopefully one day you’ll get a chance to ask him.
Good practice and exploration to you,
Bill
