When Bruce taught Heaven and Earth in the Old Yang Edition he clearly spoke of continuing to open horizontally during Movement 2. In the first group of the Opening and Closing Edition videos he says to close during movement 2.

Is this a change or is there more complexity that I am unaware of? I would be very grateful for a clarification on this point since it changes the energetics at that point significantly.

    Thank you for any help,

    David Shaver

    Hello David,

If you are referring to the second movement of Heaven & Earth where you’re doing the small heavenly orbit, traditionall that’s done with an opening and closing movement.  You can open with the hands clenching and close with the hands opening but that’s a more challenging way to do it.  Traditionally, the physical movements and energetic components match and then after you’ve mastered that, you can try and learn to do it both ways.  Practicing it with movement and energy in conjunction will make the opening or closing stronger.

    We hope this is helpful.

    Warm Regards,

David may be asking about the second movement of the macro orbit movement, when the hands come down to the back of the head. I learned this as a continuation of the opening that the raising of the hands over the head begins: so you open from the beginning of the form until you bring the elbows in and bend the bow.

Is that what you mean, David?

Yes, Mathew, I was referring to Movement 2 in the Macrocosmic orbit not movement 7 which is the second part of the microcosmic orbit. Sorry if anyone was confused.

I still feel that I understood the two different approaches and would love to have clarification.

    Thank you for your replys.

Since I am not receiving a reply let me be more specific.

I am referring to the 2nd of the 7 movements in Heaven and Earth. Should one be opening all the way through movements 1 and 2 or is closing beginning somewhere during movement 2?

Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks.

    Hi David,

There are many different ways that the macro movement of H&E can be done. Both options you mention: opening through movement 2 or only opening to movement 1 then closing through movement 2 are fine…

There can be specific reasons to open or close during a movement for health or power reasons, but that is done on a case by case basis with a teacher directly involved guiding the student for a specific result in mind.

That said a general rule is the longer the open and close cycle the stronger, healthier and more control over the body’s chi a practitioner will have. While the standard is open until the end of movement 2 in the macro then close for the rest of the macro movement. Bruce has taught the whole macro movement as an open and the micro as a close for example. Or openings and closings can be broken down into smaller movement segments to help those with more charge in their nervous system to relax.

We hope this is clear and helps. Bruce will also be doing Q&A’s with the group so please post the question here and he may have more to add. Also if you can state your specific experience (i.e. which way works better for you and why) he may give you specific advice.

    Best,

    EA Team
