After folding forward while sitting in the chair do your feet press into the ground as you return to upright?

Gary. Others may have a different experience than I but the movement in falling forward is relaxed and smooth; I feel the slightest ‘pressure’ on the thigh but, upon allowing the kwa to open, the rise upwards happens by itself. On some occasions, I sense a ‘spreading energy’ warming the soles of my feet. However, the soles are not involved in the kwa opening and bringing me upright.

Gary and Ruth, as I just put in a reply to a Week 1 question, this is exactly the kind of conversation we hope to see in these forums – with everyone in the course  helping each other learn.

I’d like to encourage everyone to jump in with your impressions when you see a post of interest to you. It’s just like a regular in-person course – you often learn more from the others in the course and from your own experience trying things out than you do from the teacher.

From now on I’ll be answering less frequently than I have so far. Richard and I will be monitoring the posts, but will only answer when we feel that the conversations are wandering a bit too far afield or that something needs to be addressed quickly. Our tradition’s perspective on learning is that It’s good for you to explore, struggle, discuss, and take in others’ impressions. You’ll more fully learn and  “own” what you’ve learned than if you just keep doing what the teacher said because they said it.

Since I’m here, I’ll just say that Gary and Ruth are both playing with good stuff. It’s important to remember that each of us is going to find our own way into the exercises, and different people are going to have different experiences and still be on the “right” track. In fact, you may have very different experiences on different days, depending on what’s going on your body and mind at the time.

So it’s useful to hear other’s experiences because that will open your mind to other possibilities. But don’t expect to find the same things necessarily work for you or that you’ll have the same experiences. Instead pay attention to what your experience is at any time and play with it.

Try your own ideas out in your body. Develop sensitivity to subtle muscle and other physical and energy sensations as you explore. And ask through this forum what others are experiencing and trying. The bottom line is that when things “click” in Dragon and Tiger you’ll feel less tension and more space in your body, more bounce, and more alive and full of chi. Use this as your litmus test for your explorations.

I know we have a lot to be aware of just in the 1st movement but are we supposed to be incorporating the kwa movement when the knee goes forward when raising the qi upward ? in a not so exaggerated way?

Or is the kwa movement an exercise to do on its own at this time?

When you first learn it, you just do it on its own. In future weeks, you’ll find out how you incorporate kwa movements into the 7 exercises.
