This seems as good as any group to ask: how far can a meditation master’s presence be felt? Is it possible for about thirty or forty miles? I did not think this possible before, but maybe…

I only ask, because I have noticed an increased incidence of generally more powerful experiences at some specific times rather than others.

Of course, I suppose that at the level of the mind, distance is irrelevant, and some ancient Taoists, in their isolation, can extend their compassion – or, as it has been said: “a little leaven leavens the whole lump”!

But I am interested if mere proximity of distance can make even the tiniest difference…

    Anybody?!…

    It’s an interesting question.

I read one of Wong Kiew Kit’s books once where he recounts a story of one of his students being ill (I think she was going blind) and he was able to transmit Chi to her from one country to another, to bring about healing.

Now obviously this is a self reported tale and if you accept it’s veracity, a transmission of Chi for healing rather than meditation. But probably a similar principle.

He mentions in his books various studies carried out in China regarding the nature of Chi and transmission over distance. Sadly I have been unable to find any further reference to these studies (as I am interested in the scientific study of such things) but lets face it, I don’t read Chinese, so even if I could find the study, couldn’t read it anyway !

I find it very interesting the way modern technology is being used in conjunction with this sort of subject. Im sure if you have trained with Bruce you have experienced his use of the Taoist liturgies.

I purchased a copy of his CD set of the liturgies and to be honest was sceptical as to whether it would still have any effect at all. My reasoning was that whatever Bruce is transmitting when he makes the sounds, is a lot more than the sound and this probably wouldn’t be recorded on the disc.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the recordings do have an effect, though, for me, not as intense as experiencing Bruce in person .

I have experienced a webcast related to Dzogchen teachings and there is absolutely no doubt about transmission over distance there. Back before webcasts were possible such things were arranged by everyone following a practice at a given time and transmission still occurred.

So my experience is that yes it is possible. I think the master has to have the intention to do it and “transmit” the student ideally has to be receptive and tune in and they need to do it at the same time. (But I might be wrong)

Your experience of meditation being more or less intense at different times may not be to do with transmission however.

Certainly your own mind has a kind of “internal weather” and you can experience that very differently as it ebbs and flows at different times.

There is also a kind of background psychic weather that changes. Some times of day are generally more peaceful than others, some times of year, some locations etc.

Meditators have traditionally retreated to the mountains etc and I think that is partly to minimise the background psychic white noise, to allow them to more easily connect with what’s inside themselves.
