AnonymousGuestI am happy to meet you all. This series could not have come at a better time. I really want to learn how to properly meditate. I have been involved in marital arts since I was a teenager (long time ago). Now i am into the kinder, gentler forms such as qi gong, tai chi and bagua. I have studied dragon and tiger and presently am learning “opening the energy gates”.
I am curious about what your instructor meant about the dangers of meditation. Being emotional stress most of the time, I find myself really needing the art of meditation to stay center and focus and help my other practices.

AnonymousGuestHi all – I’ve just signed up, and am based in Guildford, UK (near London). I have been practising tai chi Wu short form and some nei gung exercises in a very erratic way for maybe 8 years, and have still managed to get benefit out of them. I went to one of Bruce’s meditation evenings in London last October, and realised that much of the tension i experience in my body seems to come from my mind. Actually committing myself to doing something regularly is a big step, and possibly my biggest challenge. Hopefully the online group will help!

James MurrayMemberSince you live in Eugene, you might want to look up Solala Towler, who is the editor/publisher of The Empty Vessel, a journal of contemporary Taoism. He resides in Eugene and has many resources for possibly expanding your horizons. I have subscribed to his journal for several years and they have provided to me several insights into Taoism as well as Tai Chi and related martial arts.

AnonymousGuestAs far as dangers of meditation, the implications were two-fold. One that sometimes meditators get so involved in meditation that they retreat from the world and have difficulty managing an outward life. Two, that without proper guidance there are deep areas of the mind that can lead to madness or other “dangers”.
I have no experience with either of these “issues” though have read and heard similar cautions presented from multiple sources.

AnonymousGuestThanks for the suggestion. I know of Solala and his publication. The Empty Vessel is a wonderful contribution to the modern study of Taoism.

AnonymousGuestHi Folks,
Just thought I’d introduce myself, pretty new to formal meditation- recently I’ve been playing with some of the exercises in Relaxing into Your Being- I have a background in Internal Martial Arts and I want to look a little deeper into this stuff, so this circle has come along at just the right time for me;)
I’m based in Penzance, West Cornwall. UK and am looking forward to the year ahead.Happy practising,

AnonymousGuestHi, I live in Bandon, Oregon. I have meditated for a long time but this is the first time that I am taking a meditation class. I have read several of Bruce’s books after finding the first one four or so years ago. I used to do Karate and Tai Chi Chuan but have not been doing it since I moved to Bandon. I am glad to have this class available online.

James MurrayMemberHi,
I just joined the Taoist Meditation Circle in an attempt to get deeper into meditation and practice. I live on the Olympic Peninsula and have studied, practiced and taught for over 25 years. I am currently teaching Tai Chi, spending some time with Bagua and reviewing some of the weapons forms and Wudan martial arts. I have no problem relaxing or letting the mind float and observe my body and conditions. I do hope that the meditation practice goes deeper into what to expect and how to approach mental awareness. The one positive comment is to provide for a regular time and space for meditation.
I have also been intrigued by the possibilities of deep meditation practice. Several years ago, Dr. John Painter offered a class in meditation that I could not commit the time to take. He did offer to teach some of the more esoteric subjects like being able to levitate and to appear in two places at the same time. I don’t know where Bruce is going with this circle, likely not to those places, but perhaps to lay the groundwork to achieving some deeper insights.March 24, 2011 at 2:10 pm #130560
AnonymousGuestHi, I am Vasea. I live in Europe at the moment.
Reading all your posts, I see you are for the most part not new to this. I can really say I am an absolute beginner to Bruce Frantzis’s practices. I have tried to meditate on and off before but never took any classes on it, or on martial arts. But listening other people say about the incredible tools that Taoism, Inner Dissolving or other Eastern Practices can provide to heal your inner wounds and transform your life, I decided to give it a try myself. I really hope that I will be able to handle it all and get the support from this community.
Best wishes!March 24, 2011 at 8:16 pm #130561
AnonymousGuestWelcome and good luck, Vasea.

AnonymousGuestGood to find the forum active; want to add meditation further to better understand dissolving / loosening in the first stage.
Somehow I ordered but lost the details where to download the sessions. Thankful for any hint.

AnonymousGuestI took my first class on Taoist Water Method Meditation from one of Bruce’s students, Susan Rabinowitz in NYC in 2004. I’ve taken tai chi and Energy Gates from Bruce here on Maui, and I feel really connected to his approach; it is effective with me and I need to stick with what works. I am a massage therapist, and these ideas are so useful to pass on to my clients. It is not my immediate plan to attend instructor training for meditation, but I will definitely attempt certification the next time he offers the opportunity to certify. I love this method and I am grateful to have this opportunity to be guided by Bruce.
