Probably a bit late posting this as I am off to my first Tai Chi class this afternoon, but my friend told me you need special tai chi shoes or plimsoles for a class.

Unfortuneately I never thought about footwear and have only looked out joggers and loose top. As I am going straight from work I wont have time to get footwear. Looks like I may have to wear just socks or even go barefoot to start with.
What is best to wear on the feet and what is best clothing so I am more prepared for next weeks class please

My advice would be wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and is non restrictive to physical movements. What works for me is a loose fitting T-shirt, loose and lightweight jogging bottoms, and a pair of light shoes with flat, soft soles (Feiyue kung fu shoes are my favourites). It is helpful if you can feel the ground through the shoes. Now you have seen what everyone else wears in the class you can structure an outfit that helps you blend in.

    All the best

Thanks for reply. Most people wore tracksuit bottoms and t shirt/sweatshirt.
As I had forgot change of footwear I had to go barefoot as socks were too slippy on the floor, but I felt I got good contact with the floor so will keep going barefoot now as I am used to it a bit. Must say I enjoyed my first class although I have probably forgotten most of the few moves I was taught. Looking forward to next class.

Alexandra, for my money…the less shoe the better! Unless you’re practicing on a really rough surface like concrete or asphalt, bare feet allow you to feel your body the best. If you do wear shoes, the flatter and thinner the sole the better. I’m glad that you enjoyed your first class, and good call on going barefoot!
